One week before his law school graduation, Jake Rutledge is shattered. His fraternal twin, Blake, has died of a drug overdose. When Jake returns to his hometown of Oakley, West Virginia, he discovers that his brother was not the only person hooked on opioid painkillers. The entire region has been ravaged by an epidemic insidiously planned and carried out by one of America’s most powerful pharmaceutical companies.

Still wet behind the ears, Jake is determined to seek justice for all the victims of Big Pharma’s greed. He soon learns that the drug companies’ tentacles reach far and deep. His only hope is to get Nicholas “Deke” Deketomis to help. A partner at one of the country’s most powerful law firms, Deke’s “as tough as a two-dollar steak” and well-known for his winning tactics against corporate wrongdoers. With just enough persistence, Jake coaxes Deke to see Oakley’s devastation firsthand. Overwhelmed, Deke agrees to join forces with Jake.

And that’s when the real heat begins. Death threats, bribes, unlawful property seizure schemes – all are connected to the massive distribution of both legal and illegal drugs. Everyone is impacted, from the highest levels of corporate America to corrupt local officials to their lackeys and hapless victims. The complexity of the schemes is overwhelming.

Working tirelessly, the lawyers begin to uncover the truth. Along the way, Jake falls in love with Anna Fowler, a former homecoming queen who has succumbed to the power of opioids. With his support, she weans herself off the drugs. Hope begins to bloom — when suddenly, Jake disappears. As Deke undertakes a desperate search to find him, questions swirl. Has Jake abandoned Anna and his crusade? Can the case against the evildoers move forward without him? Will Oakley and its residents survive? Law and Addiction is real-life drama at its finest — a book that clears away the darkness page by page, spotlighting a profound truth about our society through expert storytelling.

My Review

I have never been so surprised and shocked at how an author has truly explored and written a truly compelling, heartbreak and anger inducing story about the real life tradegy and effect that the opioid epidemic.

Reading the authors not in this story I knew that Mike Papantonio really put work into his research and how this topic is close to his heart.

“ My hope in writing this fictional account was too both edify and entertain. I wanted to provide readers with a front-row account of this epidemic, but not bludgeon them in the process. While I didn’t try to gloss over the human suffering, I still remain a believer in the power of the human spirit to prevail. At the same time, I am hopefu about getting meaningful justice out of this terrible and sad epidemic caused by corporate greed. I hope this novel does spark outrage in readers. As a nation, we need to be outraged. “

This was a really fast paced and easy to read story. I flew through this story and had a lot of emotions as I made my way through the court case and following our main character trying to deal with his grief and doing what he can to save other people from what happened to his brother.

The fact that Law and Addiction focused on how normal people who went to get help from doctors ended up becoming addicts and how the pharmaceutical companies started creating addicts for greed and more profit.

I believe that Mike put a lot of himself into this story and showing that we need to stay educated on what’s going on in the world around us because sometimes big companies and the government are not out to help us sometimes.

The overall plot is about our main character is gathering a legal team to combat the pharmaceutical companies and help with this epidemic and save people but another plot starts to form that I was not expecting.

We follow another part of the government who are also corrupt and greedy also hurting people for their own profit. This story truly sparked anger and outrage within me because of how true this story is and how cruel the world truly is.

As our main character Jake is creating his legal team we see him going from being left alone after his twin brother has passed away and has no other family to choosing and creating his own family. This shows the importance of chosen family as well as given family which I really liked.

Law and Addiction is classed as a legal thriller which I haven’t read enough but I really loved following the research, gathering of information and arguments in this case. I have always had an interest in the Law so I loved seeing Mike put his studies and degree of Law into this story.

All in all this was such an amazing and thought provoking novel which sparked a hell of a lot of emotions in me. If you love legal thrillers about real world issues this story is for you.
