Gifted| this book was gifted to me by the author in exchange for a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fionn is the wielded of a legendary Tempest Blades, and he is blessed- or cursed – by the gift. Though his dad as a warrior are long over, his past leaves him full of guilt and regret. Life, however has other plans for him, when he agrees to help a friend locate a missing person.

Gaby and Alex never expected to become heroes… until they met Fionn. As an ancient evil arises and consumes the land, Fionn must help them to master their own gifts and Tempest Blades.

Together the three of them, and their friends will chart a course aboard the flying ship Figaro to save the planet. Will fionn’s past be an anchor, or will he overcome the one failure from his former life before time runs out? In a world where magic and science intermingle, anything is possible. Including second chances.

My review

This story is not a genre I would normally pick up but the description of Tempest Blades: the withered king got me really intrigued! So I was very excited to jump into this book and explore this sci fi/fantasy book.

We meet many likeable and lovable characters within this story. I really loved the character development within this story and the background and history we are given that lets us empathise and learn everything we can about them.

We have three main protagonists: Fionn, Gaby and Alex.

Fionn is a strong and very talented but is also very scarred by his past. At the beginning of this story Fionn has hidden himself away from people  because he is afraid that if he is around others they will die because of him.

Gaby is a strong, fierce woman who is afraid of her own powers because they can shut off her emotions and change her as a person which in my opinion is terrifying!

Alex! Oh little cute Alex. I absolutely loved this character. He is so smart, funny and powerful. He is very unsure of himself and I loved watching him grow throughout this story and become more confident in himself! I just want to pinch his cheeks!!!

As I mentioned above I wasn’t very sure heading into this book but omg I loved this book! There is great world building and it didn’t take a lot of time to figure out what’s happening in this world and what is at stake. This story switches between the characters points of view which I really enjoyed meeting these characters and seeing things through their eyes.

We have some amazing characters within this story but I feel like more background and character history could have been included within this story to make us readers connect more with them.

This story is very action packed and pretty detailed fight scenes which kept me intrigued from beginning to end.

Within The Tempest blade there are small hints and cute moments within the story that isn’t a huge main part of the plot but it does give small relief between the fight scenes and tension of the world ending! It’s very nice and refreshing to see that romance doesn’t take over the story at all.

Due to the multiple perspectives within this story we get to follow the whole battle once they split up. It gave so much more depth to the war and I loved loved seeing each person doing their part within the fight to save the world.

Final thoughts and emotions

I really loved this story but the only thing that has stopped me from giving The Tempest Blade five stars is that the ending didn’t quite answer my questions or leave me feeling fulfilled. I’d have liked  a little a few more pages explaining what everyone’s plans are and how the world is recouping from this huge battle.

About the author

Born in the frozen landscape of Toluca, Mexico, Ricardo dreamed of being a writer. But needing a job that could pay the rent while writing, he studied Industrial Design and later obtained a PhD in Sustainable Design, while living in the United Kingdom. There, he did a few things besides burning the midnight oil to get his degree:

– Trained in archery near Nottingham

– Found Excalibur

– Discovered whether Nessie was real or not (but won’t disclose his findings)

– Worked in a comic book store to pay for his board game & toy addiction.

He is back now in Toluca, living with his wife and his two dogs where he works as an academic at the local university. He has short stories featured in anthologies by Inklings Press and Rivenstone Press, and he was nominated to a Sidewise Award 2017 for the short story “Twilight of the Mesozoic Moon”, co-written with his arch-nemesis, Brent A. Harris. He also won a local contest for a fantasy short story during college. But hey! That one doesn’t count, does it? You can find his rants and other work—both fiction and opinion pieces—on his own website,, and from time to time on the Altered Instinct blog, Tempest Blades: The Withered King, his first novel, has been in the works for quite some time. He really hopes you get awed by its kickassery.
