pros and cons of a long distance relationship

There are pros and cons to everything in life and there are definite pros and cons of a long distance relationship. I absolutely love Ryan but I find the distance is so so difficult for me especially when I am in a spiral with my mental health. Not many see how special that long distance relationships are but they really are even though they are impossible sometimes.

The pros of an LDR

Trust

Trust is a huge part of being in a long distance relationship. It builds a solid foundation for you and your partner for when you are together. The trust between two long-distance lovers is quite extraordinary.

Because there is so much communication between partners the trust that they have is absolute and concrete.

Excellent communication skills

the main way you communicate is probably going to texting or calling. This will lead to very strong communication skills. We also learn how to tell when our partners are upset, happy or having a bad day through a simple text message.

Ryan is amazing at this. When we are texting or talking on video chat he can tell what sort of mood I am in. He understands me better than anyone ever will and I believe that is because of the constant communication that we have because of our long distance relationship.

It’s an adventure

I love to travel and when I move to New Zealand it is going to be a HUGE adventure. No matter if it’s just a drive, a train ride or a plane trip it’s an adventure. You can explore your partners city/country, learn about their culture and so much more.

The cons

The distance

This is the most obvious disadvantage of a long distance relationship. There is nothing worse than being so far away from your partner especially when you just need a cuddle or some physical contact. I love just curling up against Ryan and having his arms wrapped around me. It instantly makes me feel better but sadly it doesn’t happen often enough. Short term pain for long term gain.

Trying to explain your relationship

If I was given money for every time I had to try and explain to family or anyone for that matter about how the relationship works I would be living in New Zealand already with Ryan. Although Long distance relationships are not as rare as they used to be people, people still don’t understand how these relationships work.

I have had people laugh at me, roll their eyes and make fun of me saying my relationship isn’t real and that he is definitely cheating on me.

It can be very frustrating but I know that Ryan loves me and I am happy in my relationship and I honestly don’t give a shit about what other people think of my decisions.

It’s expensive

Depending on the distance this might not be a disadvantage for you and your partner but for Ryan and I this is a huge factor in why Ryan and I aren’t living together already. This can be the same for you too. We will get there. I am going to be living and enjoying life in New Zealand before 2019 is over!
