Ways to distract yourself from self-harm

Many people self-harm due to a plethora of reasons. Self-harm has always been a controversial topic. As a child, I never heard of self-harm but due to living in an abusive household I wanted to cut myself to get a release. I needed a release and this was the only way I could think of. My chest would burn, my ears would ring, my skin would crawl and my fingers would inch towards an object that would release the excruciating pain inside of me. Fortunately, I could stop and distract myself from doing something self-destructive. Sadly that’s not the case for others. The pain can be too much for people and they self harm to release the pain they feel inside. It becomes an addiction, A way to soothe the pain… momentarily. It can be difficult to not self-harm when it has become an addiction but I have a list of ways that could help you distract yourself from self-harm.

Ways to distract yourself from self-harm

  • Squeeze ice cubes
  • Draw with a marker on where you want to self-harm
  • Go to the gym/workout  
  • Dance
  • Tear up pieces of paper
  • Scream
  • Hit a punching bag
  • Snap a rubber band on your wrist
  • Take a hot shower or bath ‘
  • Writing down all your feelings and emotions
  • Let all your emotions out and cry
  • Listen to music
  • Talk to a friend or family member
  • Sleep
  • Reading
  • Pop bubble wrap
  • Get out of the enviroment you are in
  • Go for a walk
  • Smash a watermelon
  • Count the things around you
  • Look at happy photos
  • Cuddle or play with your pet
  • Squeeze a stress ball
  • Watch your favourite tv show
  • Bite a hot chilli
  • Watch your favourite tv show
  • Have something you can fidget with
  • Meditate
  • Yoga

  1. These are some amazing tips! I was luckily the person that could restrain herself from self-harming, but I’m well aware that many people don’t, I had a friend that used to cut, as well as my sister. Wish I had known some of these ways before!
