You need to stand up for yourself. Whether it’s to tell a co-worker to stop talking over you in a meeting, a friend making comments that hurt you or to stand up to someone who is completely disrespecting you and treating you badly. I hope that this post can help you with standing up for yourself.

Each and every day we are faced with situations that we either hide away from the confrontation or you stand up and express your views. Standing up for yourself is crucial. Being a people pleaser can end up with you being used or manipulated.

Reasons to stand up for yourself.

Gives you a confidence and self-esteem boost.

When you can stand up and tell someone that you don’t like the way they are speaking to you or the way they have been treating you will let you take back control of your life and improve your confidence.

Allowing yourself to feel strong will then make you stronger. You will notice it and so will people around you. This confidence will help you realise your own self-worth.

Sets a standard for the way people treat you.

If you don’t set boundaries for the people around you how will they know how to treat you? When something happens that you don’t like. Say it. That shows they you don’t like what they said or did, this is teaching them where you set your boundaries. This won’t allow others to walk all over you.

Tips on how to stand up for yourself.

Don’t be afraid to say no.

Saying no is really important. If you don’t want to do something then don’t. Doing something you don’t like or that upsets you is no way to live your life.

Keep calm.

You can get your point across in a calm manner and still be strong and assertive. There is no need to get aggressive towards the person.

Use “I”  statements.

This is about you and your boundaries. Tell them how they made YOU feel.

Standing up for yourself can be difficult but knowing your boundaries, having friends and families support can go a long way in helping you feel more confident.

  1. I really needed this today. Thank you. Yesterday some men made a very crude comment to me as I walked into work. It made me feel threatened and absolutely awful. I was going to let it go and then I thought about it and mentioned it to another colleague as I was not sure if I was being over-sensitive. My colleague told me that I had to say something. I did and they apologised. But I still feel bad about calling them out. I am a married woman, nearly 50 and I was being subjected to a comment that was more akin to the playground than a professional environment. I don’t know why I felt so guilty about standing up for myself.

    1. It can be difficult standing up for yourself because we feel that if we ignore it, it will go away but that’s not it. Our feelings don’t just disappear and that’s why we need to stand up for ourselves. Thank you for sharing that information with me
